Clegg: Support our troops now

9.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Sun 1st Jun 2008

Nick Clegg has called for urgent action to improve conditions for British troops fighting in Afghanistan. The Lib Dem leader recently visited troops and held talks with Afghan leaders.

Mr Clegg said:

"I am very concerned that too many of our soldiers are having to use old kit. Equipment shortages are also too common."

Nick Clegg also highlighted issues of low pay amongst junior soldiers in particular. Some soldiers get just 30 minutes of free phone calls each week.

Nick added:

"We owe the men and women of our Armed Forces in Afghanistan a huge debt of gratitude.

"The consequences of failure here for Britain would be devastating."

The Lib Dems opposed the war in Iraq, but believe the mission in Afghanistan is essential to making the world safer.
